Dear reader reader
As we approach our departure date, I would like to remind you of some items that need to be taken care. These items must be completed only when 90 days or less prior to arrival. Do not leave them for the last minute.

Below are some of the most important. You are required a valid passport with at least 6 months before due for renewal. You also need to apply for your Visa ($81) which is easily obtained using the link below. Additionally you must submit your vaccine card through GlobalHaven.org and fill out the Health Surveillance form following the link below.

Later on, I would love to get together with all of you via Zoom, to go over some questions you may have. In the meantime, I'll leave you the information you need below.

Here are some important documents you should have readily available (printed and electronic form).

Things to bring:

You can click on the products to find them in Amazon.com
  • A product like Sawyer Insect Repellent that is applied to your clothes in advance. Ingredient is 0.5% Permethrin. This will prevent most biting insects.
  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight so you have extra light when moving from the restaurant to your room on the lodges.
  • You will need a couple of power adapters type G. See picture to the right.
  • Don't forget your power adapter and bringing a power strip that is dual voltage. If it has USB charging ports even better, so you can charge your phone or camera batteries. Remember most of our modern electronics have power supplies that work on dual voltages 110/220.
  • I also bring a couple of power banks, to charge on the go if needed. I never had to used it, but you never know. Some lodges run on powerplants and they shut them off at night.

Few other Q&A's

  • Can we do laundry? Yes, laundry is available at all lodges.
  • Should I bring Walking Stick/Trekking poles? If you feel better using them, feel free. Make sure they are the collapsible type as most airlines will require you to check them in with your luggage.
  • Water-Bring a re-usable water bottle as you can refill it at the lodge before leaving on safari. Water is potable in all lodges we are staying.
  • Tripod or no tripod? Since we are going to be shooting mostly from a vehicle, the use of tripod will be limited to any place where we actually walk around. That may include a few stops and around the lodges. If you are doing video, I will recommend you bring a basic tripod, but else, it will just occupy space in your luggage.
  • Money, Shillings or Dollars? You can use US dollars almost anywhere, including for tipping. It may be a good idea to have some shillings to buy miscellaneous items or even snacks. If you do so, regardless of the currency, do not bring large denomination bills. In the case of US dollars nothing larger than $20, and the bills must be immaculate, no damage of any kind or they may be rejected.
  • Credit Cards - Both Visa & MasterCard are widely accepted through Kenya. In some cases you can avoid international fees if the charge is made in US dollars instead of shillings.
  • Plastic bags are banned in Kenya, so whatever you bring in must come back with you.
  • About the vehicles - there will be only 4 people per vehicle which have capacity of 8+ people. So there's plenty of room. The roofs are pop-up roofs and the company includes bean bags to put on the roof ledge.
  • Clothing - I will recommend long sleeves and something to cover your head, like a hat or cap to keep the dust from your hair. Wear neutral colors and avoid blue or black as the tsetse flies love those colors. Low-profile hiking shoes or tennis shoes will do fine.
  • Tipping - Tipping suggestions are only that, and you should tip according to the level of service. On average $2 dollars a day for housekeeping services may be fine, but if the overall service from the lodge deserve more, feel free to leave some money in the tip box by the reception. For our personal guides I will suggest not less than $10 per day. Our guides are usually our drivers too, so normally we collect all the tips at the end of the tour and distribute them evenly among the guides. Now if you individually want to tip one of the guides for their extraordinary work, feel free to do so.
