Firstly, we want to thank you again for joining our Costa Rica 2022 photo tour. For nearly 20 years we have provided photography tours to this wildlife rich destination. Every year brings new adventures with new species photographed, as well as new experiences. Whether you were on the first session or the last, I’m sure you got some amazing images to bring you back good memories. Below is a brief story from each session and a link to their respective Facebook pages.

Session 1

One of first session we dealt with bad weather, medical emergencies, and even a close call on a horseback riding adventure. At the end we all made it fine. Lee Skrobot, Nyleen and I had the pleasure to visit the kids at the school in Playa Azul, where Lee interacted with them in the subject of space exploration while Nyleen translated every comment and questions the kids had. This was perhaps the highlight for me and Nyleen, and I’m sure it was for Lee. The kids asked great questions and Lee was there to answer each of them. At the end we signed the notebook NASA provided to the children. Thank you, Lee. We also donated some food to the school as we do on every trip, thanks to the generosity of each one of you.
Mike Berry did a great job driving the second van around the country and his non-photographer wife Debra, turned photographer on this trip. Way to go, Debra!

Some of us got sick on arrival and managed to pass it to everybody else, but we all made it fine. Judging by the photos posted on the Facebook page, we did capture some great species despite the weather we faced.

Session 2

Oh, we started on the wrong foot on this one! Some flights got delayed and we didn’t leave the airport until 4pm that day. Our trip over the mountains on our way to the Caribbean side proved to be the most challenging one in history. As we were coming down the Caribbean slope around Cinchona, I lost the brakes and was forced to slow down the van using the engine and eventually the emergency brake. In the dark we waited for the brakes to cool off. Unfortunately, the clutch was shut and slipping, but slowly we made it to the lodge in time for dinner. A bit scary to say the least as it was dark already! We faced some rain from time to time, but managed to capture some great shots.

Again, we collected some supplies and delivered them to another school in the Tarcoles area and visited our Costa Rican daughter Melanie. Thank you all for your generosity. Toward the end of the trip while in Savegre, somebody in the group decided it was fun to spill a glass of sangria on me at dinner time. I took that as a sign of good luck and hoped for better weather.

Session 3

It all started fine and we were enjoying the birds in Lagarto Lodge when we were forced to leave early in the morning to avoid the incoming storm Bonnie. We got emergency food supplies in Fortuna, just in case and hunkered down for a non-stop night of rain. Luckily, we had great days after the storm passed and had new visitors to the feeder at Arenal Oasis. The rest of the trip was uneventful until I decided to take a side trip in search of a frog species and ended up losing a tire in the process. This was a fun challenge which we completed in about 40 minutes thanks to the help from nearby neighbors Miguel and Elly. After this incident it was all smooth sailing.
